The Weight of Our Steps

A man remembers being twelve years old. Two days into a refugee column leaving the eastern districts of Kasari, he walks ahead of his mother carrying everything the family has left. His sister rides their mother's back, asleep. On the road, they lose an old woman they cannot stop to bury. At the gate of a relief camp, his mother reaches back to give his sister water.
